Through Rio Tinto Alcan's community investment program and extensive experience of collaborating with not-for-profit and civil society organizations at local and global levels, Rio Tinto Alcan has witnessed and learned to appreciate the enormous contribution these organizations make to pressing economic, environmental, and social issues.In late 2003, Alcan Inc. adopted sustainability as the key focus for its community investment program supporting initiatives and projects that align with Rio Tinto Alcan’s commitment to environmental, social and economic sustainability. It is against this background that Alcan Inc. created the Alcan Prize for Sustainability to recognize and reward the crucial role of not-for-profit and civil society organisations committed to making a sustainable difference. ![]() The Alcan Prize for Sustainability programme is climate neutral and offsets CO2 emissions generated from management and travel activities relating to the Prize with contributions to Climate Care). Climate Care is a service that helps individuals and organizations to repair the damage their activities do to the climate. It does this by ‘offsetting’ the greenhouse gas emissions, such as CO2, from activities by reducing an equivalent amount of CO2 on their behalf. These reductions are made through a range of projects in renewable energy and energy efficiency, which not only fight climate change but bring benefits to communities round the world.
