Rio Tinto Alcan partners with the International Business Leaders Forum to facilitate an inclusive, rigorous and transparent management process. The Prize engages independent sustainability experts from around the world to ensure the process and decisions are made in a fair, objective and consistent manner.

Step by step, entering the Alcan Prize for Sustainability is a simple process:

Register on the Prize website to download the Entry Form and Guidelines for Entry.

Research and compile your entry using the guidance notes and section headings in the Entry Form.

Complete Section 1 of your entry online and obtain an Entry Number. Entries can not be accepted without a Unique Entry Reference Number.

Submit your entry no later than 12th September 2008 midnight (GMT) by preferably uploading the completed Entry Form and requested supporting documentation OR via email. Entries submitted after the closing date will not be accepted. When you have successfully submitted your entry, you will receive an email confirmation.

Assessment: Entries that meet eligibility criteria are reviewed by an independent panel of Assessors. IBLF convenes Assessment Panels comprised of sustainability practitioners, in several international markets. Assessors discuss and score entries to determine the shortlist.

The guiding principle of assessment is the demonstration of a comprehensive approach to addressing, achieving and further advancing a minimum of two dimensions of sustainability (economic, environmental and/or social).

Shortlist Entry Validation: Should your organization progress to the shortlist IBLF will request further supporting documents:
1. Most recent year of audited accounts
2. Most recent annual report

The shortlist of ten organizations will be announced in February 2009.

Adjudication Panel: An independent panel of high level, leading individuals/sustainability experts will select the Prize winner from the shortlist based on demonstration of:
  • Measurable impact on at least two or more of the sustainability principles
  • Innovation
  • Partnership
  • Replicability (providing solutions for sustainability)
  • Longevity of the organization
  • Scalability; measurable impact achieved with resources
